We replace BFT gate hinges and rollers throughout San Diego, and most jobs run $280 – $540 installed depending on whether we’re swapping one hinge or a full set of rollers plus a hinge. You’ll usually notice the problem as a gate that drags, scrapes, or leans, or as a grinding sound when the gate travels. Here’s the full picture so you know what to expect before you call.

Most BFT owners discover this failure the same way: the gate starts working harder to do the same job it did easily last month. You hear a metallic scrape near the post. The gate sags an inch on the latch side. Sometimes the opener trips its clutch and reverses mid-close, and the real culprit isn’t the motor at all, it’s a worn roller or a hinge pin that’s finally given up.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT hinge and roller components show up across the brand’s residential and light-commercial swing and slide lines: Deimos, Giuno, Phobos, Kustos, and the Alcor series. Slide gates use roller assemblies with a v-groove or flat profile depending on the track, while swing gates rely on top and bottom hinge sets. The compatibility gotcha many San Diego owners hit is bolt spacing: BFT has changed hinge footplate dimensions between generations on the Deimos line, so a hinge that looks identical may be off by a quarter inch on the mounting holes. We carry both patterns on the truck and verify spacing before we quote.
How to identify your hinge or roller without guessing:
- Check the hinge footplate for a stamped number. BFT usually etches or stamps a part code on the inner face. Send us a photo and we’ll match it.
- Measure the roller diameter and groove width. BFT slide rollers run from 80mm to 120mm depending on gate weight class. A millimeter makes a difference in track clearance.
- Note the gate weight. Heavier solid-core gates need the HD-series rollers, not the standard ones. Installing the light-duty version only trades one failure for another.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: quality aftermarket equivalents exist and we’re glad to quote them when they match the original spec for load rating and corrosion resistance. But we’ll tell you plainly if a cheaper part is wrong for your gate’s weight. Calder Gate Repair San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. We stock OEM where it matters and proven equivalents where they perform just as well.

Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate leans visibly at the latch post or drags on the ground at one corner. This is almost always a worn hinge pin or an ovalized hinge bore. The gate’s entire weight has been riding on a pin that’s now egged out the hole and needs the hinge replaced, not just tightened.
- You hear a grinding or metal-on-metal scrape during travel. The roller bearing is shot, and the wheel is no longer turning, it’s sliding. Every cycle wears a flat spot and makes the noise worse.
- The gate shudders or stutters halfway through the track. A flattened roller or a chipped v-groove catches at the same point in every cycle. That’s a mechanical bind, not a control board problem.
- The opener motor runs but the gate moves slowly or reverses. The motor is fighting the extra resistance of a bound roller or collapsed hinge. People replace openers this way and still have the same problem afterward.
- Visible rust staining or pitting at the hinge or roller. In San Diego’s coastal air, especially within five miles of the water, salt spray accelerates steel component failure. A roller that still spins today can seize in six months if the bearing races are rusting.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s how pricing breaks down for BFT hinge and roller work in San Diego:
- Single hinge replacement: $180 – $260 installed
- Pair of slide-gate rollers: $240 – $380 installed
- Full hinge and roller set (both sides): $420 – $540 installed
- Parts-only if we hand them to you: $45 – $120 per hinge, $40 – $150 per roller assembly
What moves the number: gate weight and size, whether we’re drilling new holes for a different footplate pattern, and whether the post itself has shifted. If the post has moved, we’ll show you photos before quoting anything. Every job gets the price in writing before we touch a bolt. And every repair carries our written guarantee and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we return at no charge. That covers the hinges and rollers we install, full stop.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible rust at the hinge barrel, rock the gate by hand to feel for play, and watch whether the roller is spinning or skidding as the gate moves. What we don’t recommend doing yourself is removing a swing gate’s bottom hinge while the gate is still attached, or pulling the rollers out of a slide gate while it’s on the track. That’s hundreds of pounds of steel balanced on a moment arm. If it pins your hand or drops on you, the savings vanish in one emergency room visit.
If you’re at the point where you can hear the failure happening, call us. We’ll come out, show you the worn part, write the price down, and fix it right the first time. That’s how we run every San Diego job.
FAQs
BFT hinges and rollers typically last 7 – 10 years in San Diego before meaningful wear appears, but coastal proximity cuts that to 5 – 7 years when salt air accelerates corrosion. Gates within a few miles of the beach show bearing and pin wear noticeably earlier, and regular lubrication only partially offsets it. If your gate is within five miles of the coast and over six years old, a visual check is worth scheduling before the scraping starts. Call (619) 541-7844 if you want us to take a look.
No, a worn BFT hinge cannot be reliably repaired because the pin bore and pin wear together in a way that tightening or shimming won’t fix. Once the hole has ovalized, the hinge will loosen again within weeks no matter what you do. The honest fix is a new hinge, and that’s what we recommend rather than charging you for a temporary patch. Call (619) 541-7844 and we’ll quote the replacement before we start.
A single hinge swap takes about an hour, and a full hinge-plus-roller set on a slide gate runs two to three hours on site. The main time variable is whether new mounting holes need to be drilled to match a different BFT footplate generation. Either way, we give you a live arrival time and finish the same visit.
Yes, we stock common BFT hinge footplates, roller assemblies, and v-groove wheels on the truck, including both bolt patterns for the Deimos line’s older and newer generations. If your gate needs a less common size or an OEM part we don’t carry, we order it and schedule the install as soon as it lands. Call (619) 541-7844 and we’ll confirm the part match while you’re on the line.
