DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DoorKing-compatible keypad and intercom parts across San Diego, and most keypad replacements we quote run between $280 and $540 installed, with intercom modules typically landing in the $350 to $650 range depending on the model and whether we’re reusing your existing wiring. Same-day service is available for most keypad failures, and we’ll tell you the exact price before we touch anything. The way most San Diego owners discover the problem: the keypad stops accepting the code, the intercom stops ringing inside the house, or the gate only opens from the remote and never from the pedestrian keypad.

Call (619) 541-7844

One call from a homeowner in Clairemont last month sticks with me. Her DoorKing keypad would beep, the backlight would come on, but the gate wouldn’t move. She’d already replaced the battery in her remote thinking that was the issue. The actual culprit was a corroded ribbon cable inside the keypad housing, something that San Diego’s coastal air accelerates faster than owners expect. We had the part on the truck and she was back to using her code before her kids got home from school.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has been building access systems since 1948, and over the decades they’ve shipped a lot of keypad and intercom configurations. The keypads we replace most often in San Diego are the 1504-series digital keypads, the 1514 and 1515 telephone entry keypads, and the 1802 and 1803 PC-programmable telephone entry systems. If you have a DoorKing 6002, 6003, 6004, 6050, 6100, 6300, or 6500 swing or slide gate operator, your keypad or intercom almost certainly falls into one of those families.

The compatibility gotcha nobody tells you: DoorKing has used three different wire protocols across their keypad and intercom lines since the early 2000s, and a keypad from a 2008-DoorKing 1802 will not simply plug into a 2018-DoorKing 1803. The mounting plate looks identical. The wire colors look identical. But the data signaling is different enough that we’ve had to undo more than a few owner and handyman swaps that just dead-ended. Before you order anything online, check the model label on the back of the unit or inside the intercom housing. It’s usually a white sticker with the model number printed in black. If the sticker is gone, text us a photo of the front faceplate and the wiring behind it, and we can identify the exact part you need.

On OEM versus aftermarket: DoorKing OEM keypads and intercom boards carry the factory warranty and are built to the original tolerances. We stock genuine DoorKing parts for most common models, but we also carry a limited set of quality aftermarket equivalents for older systems where DoorKing has discontinued the OEM part. For discontinued 1504-series keypads, for example, an aftermarket drop-in replacement often costs 30 to 40 percent less and works reliably for years. We’ll always tell you which option exists for your specific model and what the tradeoff actually is, because sometimes the aftermarket part is the better call and sometimes it isn’t.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to a failed relay on the keypad’s output board or a broken wire between the keypad and the operator’s control board. We see this most often on DoorKing 1504-series keypads that are more than six years old.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. Individual keys that stop responding usually mean the membrane or tactile switch layer is worn out. You can’t fix this by cleaning the faceplate; the switch layer itself has failed inside.
  • Intercom rings but audio is one-way or completely dead. On DoorKing telephone entry systems, this is typically a faulty audio board or a wiring fault in the phone line connection. Moisture intrusion into the housing shorts the audio circuit, and we replace a lot of these after heavy San Diego rain seasons.
  • Display shows gibberish or the backlight flickers. This is often a power supply issue feeding the unit, or a failing display driver board. We check the transformer output first before condemning the keypad, because the fix can be a $60 power supply rather than a $400 keypad.
  • Gate opens randomly or at odd hours. This can be a failing keypad sending phantom signals, but we always check the loop detector and the operator’s control board before blaming the keypad. In one Bird Rock installation, a failing underground loop detector was triggering the gate at 3 a.m., and the owner had already ordered a new keypad believing that was the cause.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Diego homeowners, here’s what we typically quote for DoorKing keypad and intercom work:

  • 1504-series keypad replacement: $280 to $440 installed, including the new keypad, weatherproofing, and programming
  • 1514 or 1515 telephone entry keypad replacement: $390 to $550 installed
  • 1802 or 1803 intercom/telephone entry module repair or replacement: $350 to $650 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the audio board alone or the full unit
  • Diagnostic visit with no repair completed: $95, credited toward the repair if you proceed the same day

Every quote includes the part, the labor, weatherproofing the housing, programming your codes, and testing the full open-close cycle. We write the price down before anything starts, and the number on the invoice is the number you agreed to at the door. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back free, no questions asked. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s printed on every job ticket we hand you.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling. First, verify the keypad is getting power. If the backlight is dead and the unit doesn’t beep, check the breaker and the transformer. Second, look at the keypad housing for moisture or corrosion. If you see green crust on any terminals, that’s a clear sign of water intrusion and a professional should handle it. Third, test the gate with the remote. If the remote works but the keypad doesn’t, the problem is almost certainly in the keypad itself or its wiring.

Where DIY goes wrong with DoorKing systems: opening the keypad housing and disconnecting the wrong wire can trigger the gate’s safety reverse and send the gate slamming back, which is dangerous if someone is in the path. DoorKing keypads also carry low-voltage but live current, and a shorted wire can damage the operator’s control board, turning a $300 keypad job into an $800 board replacement. If you’re not sure, call us at (619) 541-7844 and describe the symptom. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s something you can safely check yourself.
