When the metal on your BFT gate gives out, you need a fix that holds. We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts across San Diego, with most hinge and bracket repairs running $240 – $480 installed and most full weld-and-reinforce jobs landing between $380 – $750 depending on gate weight and damage extent. You’ll usually notice the failure as a sagging gate leaf, a grinding sound when the opener strains against a bent bracket, or a visible crack running along a weld. That crack is the gate telling you it’s about to get worse, not better.

We’re an independent gate repair company in San Diego, not affiliated with BFT, but we see their gates every week. Nico Alvarez and our technicians carry the most common BFT mounting brackets, hinge assemblies, and reinforcement plate stock on the truck so we can weld and fabricate same-day on most calls.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
This covers the metalwork on BFT swing and slide gate systems common around San Diego: the Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel swing operators, plus the Aries and Sub series slide operators. The welding and fabrication side isn’t about the motor itself, it’s about the steel that connects the motor to the gate: the hinge posts, leaf brackets, rack mounting plates, and the gate frame itself.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: BFT Deimos and Phobos brackets look nearly identical from the outside, but the Deimos uses a shallower mounting offset than the Phobos. If you weld a Phobos bracket onto a gate that had a Deimos bracket, the operator arm binds and burns out the motor within months. We check the stamping on the old part or measure the offset before we ever light a torch.
On OEM versus aftermarket for BFT metalwork: the welded steel parts (brackets, base plates) are fine as quality aftermarket pieces, since they’re raw steel that gets welded anyway. But the hinge pins and bushing assemblies should stay OEM BFT. Aftermarket hinge pins are often a hair undersized, and in San Diego’s coastal air that slop turns into accelerated wear and a gate that rattles in four months.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate leaf sags 3/4 inch or more at the free end. This usually means the hinge weld is cracking or the hinge pin bushing has worn oval. The opener pushes harder to compensate, and that extra load shortens the motor’s life.
- You hear a grinding or creaking noise when the gate moves. Metal-on-metal contact at a failing weld or a bent bracket creates friction the operator wasn’t designed to fight. The sound gets worse before it gets better.
- The gate stops mid-cycle and reverses or throws an error code. BFT boards sense the extra amperage draw from a binding bracket or shifted rack and shut the motor down to protect itself. The board is fine, the metal isn’t.
- You can see daylight through a weld or a crack running along the gate frame. This is structural fatigue. Steel flexes every time the gate opens, and once a crack starts it propagates. In San Diego’s temperature swings from hot inland days to cold coastal nights, that expansion and contraction cycle is relentless.
- The gate scrapes the ground or the track on one side. A shifted hinge or a bent post changes the gate’s swing plane. The scrape is the symptom; the underlying cause is metal that moved.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, most BFT welding and fabrication repairs run between $240 and $750 installed. A single hinge re-weld with a reinforcement plate is the low end. A cracked gate frame that needs cutting out the bad section and welding in new steel is the high end. What moves the number: gate weight, how much metal has to be cut out and replaced, whether we repaint after welding, and whether the hinges need new OEM pins while we’re in there.
Every quote is written down before we touch anything. You get the parts cost, the labor, and the total, on paper, before the first spark. If we find more damage once we grind back the old weld, we stop and call you with a photo and a revised number before proceeding. No surprises at the invoice.

Every welding and fabrication job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the weld cracks or the bracket shifts within 365 days, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things safely. Look at the hinge welds with a flashlight: do you see hairline cracks or rust trails leaking out of the weld? Push gently on the gate at the free end and watch if the hinges flex. Take a photo and text it to us if you’re not sure. But here’s where DIY goes wrong on BFT metalwork: welding a gate in place without disconnecting the operator and chocking the leaf properly is a genuine crush hazard. A swing gate under spring tension or a slide gate on a slight grade can move suddenly when a weld breaks free. And most homeowners don’t have a welder rated for the steel thickness on a gate frame anyway. A cold weld from an underpowered machine looks fine for a month and fails catastrophically.

FAQs
OEM BFT hinges with proper maintenance typically last 8 – 12 years in San Diego, but coastal properties near Point Loma, La Jolla, or Coronado often see accelerated corrosion from salt air and may need hinge pin or bracket work at the 5 – 7 year mark. Inland areas like El Cajon or Santee get more thermal stress from hot days and cold nights, which shortens weld life on heavy gates. Call (619) 541-7844 for an exact assessment of your gate.
Most cracked welds and bent brackets on BFT gates can be repaired by grinding out the old weld, reinforcing with a steel plate, and re-welding, and that’s what we do in about 80 percent of San Diego calls. Only when the bracket itself is twisted beyond straightening or the gate frame rust is too advanced do we recommend full part replacement. Call (619) 541-7844 and we can look at photos before we even schedule.
Most single-hinge or bracket welding jobs take 1.5 – 3 hours on site, including grinding, welding, cooling, and rust-proofing, and we complete them same-day in San Diego. A full gate frame reinforcement can take 4 – 6 hours. Call (619) 541-7844 and we’ll give you a written time estimate with the price.
Yes. Our San Diego trucks carry the most common BFT Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel mounting brackets, reinforcement plate stock, and OEM hinge pin kits, plus compatible hardware for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates. If your BFT part is an uncommon size, we order it and typically have it within one to two days. Call (619) 541-7844 to check your specific model.
