We stock and install FAAC-compatible gate motor replacements across San Diego, with most residential swing-gate motor swaps running $850 – $1,650 installed depending on your model, and most jobs completed same-day when we have your motor on the truck. The way owners usually discover this: the gate starts groaning mid-swing, or stops halfway and sits there until you reset the breaker. Sometimes the motor hums but the gate doesn’t move at all. That’s typically the capacitor or the gearbox, not the board, and both live inside the motor housing. If you’re in San Diego and your FAAC is doing any of that, this page tells you exactly what to expect before you spend a dollar.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To
FAAC builds several distinct motor lines, and the wrong motor means a useless bracket kit and wasted time. The most common residential units we replace in San Diego are the FAAC 400 (single-swing, hydraulic), 415 (articulated arm for tight pillars), 750 and 770 (worm-gear swing for heavier gates), and the C720/C721 slide-gate motors on commercial and long driveway jobs. Your exact model is printed on a silver plate on the motor body, usually near the cable gland. Snap a photo of that label before you call; the serial prefix tells us which revision you have, and revisions matter because FAAC changed arm geometry between 400-series generations. We also see FAAC 412 compact operators on San Diego condominium gates where the post spacing is too tight for a full-size arm.
The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision matters more for FAAC than for some other brands. We prefer genuine FAAC motors and gearboxes for hydraulic units because the aftermarket hydraulic pump kits are inconsistent in hot weather. Here in San Diego, where inland areas like El Cajon and Santee see sustained summer heat, a cheaper aftermarket hydraulic motor runs hotter and shortens the seals. For the 750/770 worm-gear series, quality aftermarket equivalents from reliable suppliers hold up well and save you real money. We’ll be straight about which is which when we quote.
Calder Gate Repair is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with FAAC, but our technicians have years of hands-on FAAC-specific training, and we stock parts across the model range so you aren’t stuck waiting on a distributor.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate stops mid-cycle and won’t restart until you kill power. This is usually thermal overload in the motor windings or a failing capacitor inside the motor housing. If it’s worse on hot afternoons, that’s the clue: heat raises winding resistance, and the overload circuit trips earlier.
- Loud grinding or clicking from the motor end, not the hinge end. If the noise is at the arm connection point on a 400-series, it’s often the release mechanism gear, not the motor. But if the noise comes from the motor body itself, especially on a 750 or 770, the worm gear is eating itself. Every cycle makes it worse. Don’t keep running it.
- Gate creeps open or drifts after closing. On hydraulic units, worn internal seals let fluid bypass and the piston loses holding pressure. This is a motor pump assembly issue, not an adjustment problem, and no amount of limit-switch fiddling fixes it.
- Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. That buzz is the starter windings or capacitor trying to turn a seized gearbox. The motor is getting power; the mechanical side isn’t moving. Continuing to energize it burns the windings and turns a $1,000 repair into a $1,600 one.
- Burnt electrical smell near the motor after a cycle. Unless you recently lubricated something nearby with spray grease, that smell is either failing capacitors or overheated windings. Stop running the gate and call us. A burnt capacitor can also clip the control board, which adds cost nobody wants.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, here’s the honest range, installed:
- FAAC 400 / 412 hydraulic motor assembly (motor + pump + seals): $950 – $1,350 installed
- FAAC 750 / 770 worm-gear motor replacement: $850 – $1,250 installed
- FAAC C720 / C721 slide-gate motor: $1,400 – $1,850 installed
- Capacitor-only replacement (if caught early): $180 – $260 installed
What drives the spread: your gate’s weight and leaf length, whether we need to modify the existing bracket, whether the arm geometry needs resetting, and whether the control board survived the motor failure. The price you get on the phone is a range. The price on the invoice is the fixed number we put in writing before we turn a single bolt. If the repair isn’t right, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back at no charge. We quote parts and labor separately so you see exactly what you’re paying for. No number changes at the door.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things before calling: confirm power at the outlet or breaker, look for melted wire nuts or obvious scorching inside the control box, and note whether the gate moves freely on its hinges when released. Beyond that, I’d stop. FAAC motors are not a safe DIY replacement. Even after you kill the breaker, hydraulic units hold pressure in the piston, and the capacitors hold a charge that can bite you. The release mechanism on most FAAC models, if opened under load, can snap a finger. That’s not a warning label, that’s the actual failure we’ve seen. And the electrical side is a 120/240V feed: wrong wiring at the motor terminals means either dead board or worse. We’re a phone call away at (619) 541-7844. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like the motor or the board before we ever roll a truck.
FAQs
A properly installed FAAC motor lasts 10 to 15 years in San Diego, with inland heat shortening that to 10 – 12. Coastal salt air near La Jolla or Point Loma accelerates corrosion on exposed brushings and terminal connections, so seaside motors often need brush service or replacement by year 10. If yours failed in 5 years or less, the likely culprits are an undersized motor for your gate weight, a gate that was never balanced after a hinge repair, or a board that’s been sending partial voltage. We can tell you which when we’re on site. Call (619) 541-7844 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
Sometimes, yes. Capacitor failures, brush wear on 750-series motors, and external seal leaks on hydraulic units are all repairable at $180 – $450 in most cases, which beats a full motor replacement. But if the worm gear has ground down, the piston has scored, or the pump body has cracked from heat, the parts cost plus labor exceeds the cost of a new motor, and we’ll tell you that straight. We don’t repair a dead motor just to get the invoice up. Call (619) 541-7844 and describe the symptoms, and we’ll give you our best read before we book the visit.
Most FAAC motor replacements take 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the model and whether the existing bracket needs modification. A same-model swap on a 400-series typically runs just over an hour. If we need to reset arm geometry or modify the mount for a newer motor revision, figure two to three. We’ll text you a live arrival time before we head over, and the price is written down before we start, so you’re never watching the clock with a blank check on the table.
We keep FAAC 400, 750, and C720 motors and their most common capacitors and gear assemblies on our service trucks for San Diego jobs. Less common models like the 412 or an older 770 revision may require a parts run, and we’ll tell you that on the phone before you agree to a service call. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if you’re not sure which brand is on your gate, we can cover you either way. Call (619) 541-7844 and we’ll confirm stock before you schedule.
